“The more that you read, the more you will know. The more that you know, the more places you will go.” Says Dr. Seuss, Author and animator.
Self improvement is a continuous process of understanding and developing yourself so that you can achieve your fullest potential. It allows you to cultivate an attitude of being proactive, so that instead of waiting for good things to happen, you put in effort and make them happen.
In his article on ‘How Self-Care Can Help You Live Your Best Life.’ , Leon ho, Founder and CEO of Lifehack, wrote that,”When you’re constantly pushing yourself to learn and take up new things, your mental health also improves. Research shows that an active and engaged mind is responsible for diminishing age-related memory loss and improves overall cognitive abilities.”
Self-improvement Starts with Awareness.
Self-improvement starts with self-awareness where you get to know yourself better. This is where you identify the things that sets you apart like your strengths so that you can capitalize on them to win more in life. The difference between growth and stagnation is identifying your strengths and work to be the best in them while also knowing your weaknesses and finding the best people to partner with.
On the same note, weaknesses should also not be viewed as obstacles to hinder us, but they should be perceived as opportunities of growth and improvement. Humans are not perfect and therefore it is not a bad thing to have a weakness. If it’s a bad habit, focus on creating a more positive habit to replace the one that you don’t like. As you improve your weaknesses focus more on what you are good at because you will move faster towards your goal.
In her article ‘How to Know Yourself and Seek Self-Improvement,’ Maria Jenson, wrote that, “Before you can improve yourself, you have to know who you are and what you want so that you can go to work on yourself.”
Personal growth will allow you to Take risks and Step out of Comfort zone.
Personal growth will allow you to step out of your comfort and take calculated risks. Great achievers take risks but they take risks that are worth it. For example, investing in ventures that you know nothing about is not a calculated risk. A calculated risk would be to learn as much as you can about an investment option so that you can easily by-pass the common risks.
Taking risks is about facing your fears, stretching yourself and challenging the status quo for something much more bigger. If it was not for the risks taken by world’s great inventors then we would not be where we are today.
The Wright brothers took a risk of inventing an aeroplane; one of the brothers got injured while trying to fly a plane they invented. Risk takers are world changers, calculated risks are worth taking.
Steven Handel explains that, “The more information you have, the smaller the risk you’re taking. But the less information you have, the bigger the risk you’re taking”’ You can read the full article here, ‘The Rational Man’s guide to Taking Smart Risks.’
Self Improvement Forges Meaning Relationships.
Personal growth also helps in building relationships and proper communication. Communication is a key element in stable relationships. When you learn how to communicate to the people close to you and relate well, it can enhance the relationship that you have. In self-development you will learn skills such as empathetic listening, conflict resolving and forgiveness which can stabilize a relationship.
When you look inward and begin to development yourself, then you are on your way to building meaning relationships. The Bible says, Love yourself as you love your neighbour, which basically means that, when you learn to love yourself then you can learn to love your neighbour. When you cherish thoughts of love the outward results will be actions of love towards the world.
Joshua Hook, in his article on ‘Love Your Neighbour As You Love Yourself…But What If You Don’t Love Yourself’, even said it better when he wrote that, “I think it is tough (maybe impossible) to offer something to someone if you haven’t experienced it yourself.”
Self-Improvement Gives Life a Purpose.
Self improvement and personal development gives your life meaning and purpose. The best gift you can give to the world is adding value to everyone you interact with. You are here for a purpose and that is to serve the world. You can serve the world with your gifts, talents and abilities.
The late Myles Munroe, author, speaker and leadership consultant was quoted saying that, “The wealthiest place in the world is not the gold mines of South America or the oil fields of Iraq or Iran. They are not the diamond mines of South Africa or the banks of the world. The wealthiest place on the planet is just down the road. It is the cemetery. There lie buried companies that were never started, inventions that were never made, bestselling books that were never written, and masterpieces that were never painted. In the cemetery is buried the greatest treasure of untapped potential.”

Personal growth Brings Clarity to Life.
Self-improvement helps us to get clarity in life so that we can focus on what is important and pursue the things that will help us achieve our dreams. When you have clarity it is very difficult to be by things that don’t add value to life.
It is said that a lion chasing after a gazelle will not be distracted by a squirrel passing across the path. Such clarity will allow us to achieve our goals in life and turn our dreams into reality.
Good decision making is a product of clarity, catalysed by self-awareness and confidence. When you know your strengths and you have self-confidence, then you can make great decisions with clarity knowing that you are going to achieve your dreams.
The number one killer of dreams is self-doubt, when you doubt that you can’t do something, then you have failed even before you begin. An article by Tina Su, on ‘15 Questions to Discover Your Personal Mission’, will help you to define a purpose in your life.
Self-Improvement is Investing in Yourself.
Personal growth is about investing in yourself so that you can be well capable and effective in handling life's challenges. The most successful people create time for their personal development and growth. Self improvement has to be an intentional and life long process. Personal growth plays a major role in a person’s growth, maturity, success and happiness.
When you work on yourself you get to know yourself better which allows you to effectively utilize your thoughts and emotions in a more positive way. The advice that Jim Rohn, a business philosopher and personal development trainer, gave is, “You need to work more on yourself than you do on your job. If you work on yourself, you have a chance to make a fortune, but if you work on more on your job, you have a chance to draw a payslip.”
